Default Lt1 and header question re: hook up

Have a set of hooker 2151s that will be going on a 92. The exhaust has an OD of 2.75" the connectors come in either a 3 or 2.5". Should i down size the 3" or can the 2.5" be sized up. I was thinking of the 3" and cutting and welding it down to size. Have also heard that 2.5"s can be sized up at a muffler shop(dont know if thats possible.
Thanks and Happy Ho-Ho

Check Jegs, and Summit. They have collector connections in different sizes, some with O2 bungs already installed.

Up here the only ones i can get a hold of in time are the ones mentioned. Ordering acroos border basically doubles the cost. So im also hoping to avoid that if possible.

Ouch!!! Double the cost? Could you use the 2 1/2" and slide your 2 3/4" up to where the taper is the same diameter, then cut off and weld? I assume the collector is 3".

Thanks! That sounds like the ticket. Cause yeah its 3" there tapering down. probly flow better that way as well.

On second thought that wont work as the 2.5" for the connector is the od and the inside diameter of a 2 3/4 " exhaust is 2.5 so they would butt up against each other.

The OD is 2 3/4" and the ID 2 1/2" ? That's strange; what fills the extra 1/4" around the ID? Is it 1/4" thick pipe? I'm not familar with this as I have an '86. I thought the later cars just had 2 3/4" pipe. If it's 2 1/2" it can be opened up to fit over the 2 1/2" connector, unless the pipe is in poor condition.

:chevy Never mind...I just found some info

You should get some 3" ID tube adapters made at your muffler shop. Then have them expand your stock pipe to 3" OD so that they would slip into your 3" tube adapters and at the HOOKER Collectors. You must measure the lengths needed from the header collectors to the existing factory tubes and make the adapter tube lengths as needed.

On the drivers side you would have to remove some tubing to make the fit, on the passenger side you are going to have to add tubing because its shorter on that side. If you do this right you can just slip fit them over the stock tubes and clamp them together or band clamp them. Or you can weld both ends and just have the system break apart at the collectors.

On my 93 LT1 I used TPIS LT headers with the stock exhaust, no cats.

I dont know if this will apply to you since you have Hookers.

To mate it with my stock exhaust, I cut the longer side (drivers side) of the catback off. I then shoved some 3" intermediate exhaust extension tubing over the ends of the headers(theres no flange on the connector). These pieces i got from auto zone.

AFter test fitting the cut catback exhuast, i marked how much off the exhaust extension tubing i needed to cut off, and hacksawed off the exhaust extension tubing to the right length.

I then welded the cut extension tubing to the cut stock catback exhaust (you must do this with the exhaust off the car because the exhaust is tucked so tightly against the fiberglass floorboards), shoved the extended catback exhaust as far as I could onto the TPIS header collectors and secured the slip connection with exhaust band clamps.

I should mention I did not have a muffler shop work on it. I tried taking it a couple places to get the pipes welded. However, noone would touch it since it didnt have cats.

You run into some real 'manure'-for-brains people at these muffler shops. These are some of the biggest loser, lowlifes in the automotive world. Generally they'd spit some tobbacco spittle on the floor, and say something using at least one double negative phrase like ' I aint working on no car with no cats'. Spit....platerr (a mixture of brown, foaming tobacco spittle lands by your feet). Some times they were even threatening, like they would infer: If you dont give me some cash, ill call up the EPA and report ya, I got your plate #

At one place an old man got all pissed off over me even asking them to the weld the pipes on a car without cats.

The thing here is.....I am not asking them to remove cats, I am asking them to weld pipes. Big difference.

I finally got some info on your later model exhaust. A pipe within a pipe; strange. Is the whole system like this?

Curviet:
Heres the math. 2 3/4 " pipe less 1/8"(18 gauge steel thickness) less 1/8" for the opposite side and that leaves a total of 2 1/2" ID.

Dizwiz 24: thanks for the info. I can try and butt weld the 2.5" ers but that would mostlyley crack. Ill 'farmer' it together with a mig welder and a slip 2 3/4 inch collar over it if i need too. Thanks again

yeah, I dont know if your headers have flanges on the collectors or not.

My TPIS didnt. just ended up shoving the 3" extension pipe (Cut to the right length, and welded to my cut stock catback exhaust as I described) over the collector, secure the slip fit with $10 exhaust band clamps available from NAPA.
