Default Fluids Question?

As many of our early C4's are approaching 20 years old, I was wondering what the condition of the fluids that are not changed on regular intervals is(eg power steering & brake fluid)? I'm asking because when I checked the power steering fluid on my '86 and wiped the dipstick, the fluid was dark grey almost black! Do these fluids become contaminated with age as others do? If so, what is the proper procedure for changing these fluids? Thanks for any help and Happy Holidays.

Yeah, the PS fluid turns into sludge. Suck the reseviour out and pour in new stuff. Drive it in figure 8s with the wheel going lock to lock, do it again. Do this 4 or 5 times and you'll get most of the old out.

:iagree: I keep an old turkey baster in my tool box just for this reason. Suck out the fluid in the res. and refill. Drive it through some twists and turns and repeat process a few time and you'll be good to go.

All the fluids have additives which get depleted in time and some fluids are hudroscopic, like brake fluid.

Your maintenance schedule should indicate minimum time intervals for changing all fluids as well as lubrication intervals.

Yup, ditto here with the turkey baster. :yesnod: Very handy I might add.
