I am having a problem with a 1985 C4. For the second time is started running very poor. The idle was rough and it was smoking and popping back. It threw a 36 code on the scanner. I did some research and found out the burnoff portion was working fine. I was reading an article http://c4vettes.com/maf.htm that shows the 2 relays . When I check them I found out they controlled the fans not the maf. I checked for bad connections and came up with nothing. Any suggestions other than buying a new maf? The cars also shuts off when I unplug the maf...thanks jim
I had a similar problem, but my code 36 was intermittent. I replaced the two relays behind the battery (cheap parts!) and my problem has never come back. Since your car dies without the MAF connected it sounds like it is behaving correctly. Try the qiuck and easy fix with the relays before shelling out the money for a new MAF.
On the 85's the MAF Burnoff Module is the large silver Bosch box behind the dash pad on the passenger side. You need to get a code 36 trouble tree from a GM manual and eliminate all the other suspected options.
thanks for your responses. Last night I inspected the 1 relay behind the battery. I also inspecter the identical replay on the fender well. Seems they both control the fans for the cooling system. I can actually see the burn off wires heat up when I shut the car off. Does the car have a power relay and where...thanks...Jim
