How do you go about pulling codes from a 96? I checked http://www.c4vettes.com/ecm.htm but they only list through 93 and say I need a special tool or the service manual for a 96. I hope theres a way without the tool because I dont have it. Any help is appreciated. car only has 41,000 on the clock and im really upset its throwing codes.
ok so before i bite the bullet and take it in, its certain i cant pull SES codes on my own without a special tool?
Correct - you need to have a scan tool of some sort.
Most auto parts stores are now selling relatively (~$100) tools that will read and reset OBDII codes. It's a decent tool for the tool box if you expect to do any of your own work on a 96 or up vehicle. The good thing is that it's standard so this will work on pretty much any 96 and up vehicle.
They way I see it, it's not really different from any other tool you buy. A little more expensive maybe, but it's still not a wasted expense. Figure that a trip to the dealer to read/reset a code might cost you $40 or more (and time!) and it'll quickly pay for itself. At least that's how I see it...
It's really nice for when you do some work under the hood and either forget to reconnect something, or otherwise cause a code with no real failure. Sucks having to go to someone else and pay them to fix your "oops" :D
This will NOT work on a '96 with OBD II. You can pull CCM codes this way, but not powertrain codes from the powertrain control module (PCM).
Will it work on OBD I? I ask because I have seen some procedures for getting all codes from ALL modules (e.g. PCM, rtd, ccm, etc).
Are you saying that this procedure is for pre-OBDII? Or that it is entirely bogus?

It should work on all OBD I cars, although the specific pins are different for '93 and earlier vs '94 & '95 (different # of connector pins on earlier cars vs '94 and up)
ok, in she goes at least for a preliminary check on thursday. with the amount of miles she has, i sure hope its cheap. i just dropped $360 to have my daily fixed today, i cant handle vette bills
