Need starter info...
This is not truly Corvette related but during the winter I work on my other projects and afterall it is a Corvette block!
I am mating up a mini (hitachi) high torque starter to a Chevy flywheel and block marriage and I would like to make sure the gears mesh well so I know if I need shims. How do I get the starter gear to "stay out" so I can see its alignment with the flywheel? I know there's a trick, but I don't know what it is. Thanks for any help.

You can connect 12 volts to the solenoid and it will kick out the drive gear but NOT turn the starter.
I did it a few months ago when I was installing a mini-starter on a friends new 434. I used my battery charger, clamping the negative to the block.
Just don't keep the solenoid energized for too long so as not to over-heat it.
