It's been a bad year for Corvette ownership. During the past year, I've replaced the ECM, PCM,($400) Opti-Spark, ($600, Ouch!) transmission ($1,200)(Twice! Second time was under warenty thank god) Rear wheel bearing ($500), and brakes ($150 did it myself). Today I found I had a flat tire, so more $$ to Goodyear. It's been my experience that the engine itself is good, however the parts connected to it are pure crap. Next vehicle I own will be a stick. Anyone want a 94 ??
It seems that when it rains it pours. I can relate about your problems. This year hasn't been bad, but the year before (2002), I had the water pump, optispark, intake gasket, all 6 u-joints, all 4 tires, all 4 brakes and rotors, ignition module, ignition coil and the collant hoses all go bad. Thought the same thing you are going through. Good news was that since I had all that work done, it has been a lot less painful. Last year I replaced all 4 tires (bought new rims & tires as a package to dress the Vette up, wasn't necessary), started rebuilding the suspension (still have the rear and the front lower control arms to replace), purchased the parts to upgrade the front brakes, etc. Maintenance last year was next to nothing. Good luck!!

"the only way I could afford this beast is by servicing it myself... plain and simple"
Same here.
Just blew up second boat motor $3000, All four Vette brake pads$200, Radio went out. Replaced with new system$300, then heater fan quit working. Fix poor conection, and on first test drive, my clutch thowout bearing breaks. Get towed home $100. Pull ZF-6 Transmission to replace all clutch parts$600, and notice a puddle of DOT3 coming from my Brake Master Cylinder$150.
God I love this car!
Drive it for 8 hours and work on it for 16.

Opti - $200
Wheel bearing - $125
Brakes - $70
Only way to go.
:iagree:
I have saved literaly thousands of dollars. I have done everything from head gasket replacement, headers and exhaust intall, to rebuilding the entire front end, and much more.
She had a lot of problems when I got her but I have managed to get the upper hand and iron out just about all of them. Paying someone else to do it can get costly. Specially dealerships. I won't even go there.
I have '90 ZR-1 and I hate to admidt that half the fun of the car is working on it. ( as long as it's during the winter non-driving season)
If there is nothing to do on it...I'll look for a project. Only true repairs required:
Blose speakers (doesn't count I knew they sucked before I bought the car)
Starter (no big deal, They all eat starters and it taught me how to pull the plenum) :seeya
I love working on my Corvette. Most people think it's such a high tech car they are surprised I work on it myself. It gives an extra amount of satisfaction when your car buddies have no idea what you're talking about - they're all still trying to make their Holleys run good.
Not to mention the money I save by doing it myself.
You got a nice price on the Opti.
Payed about 500 for mine :banghead:
You should stay away from the GM dealer.
That is another thing that should be mentioned in this thread about saving money. Only buy parts from the local GM dealer as a last resort.
