my mechanic has told me that the air pump is probably dead on my 96. i trust him and his work, but i dont think i can afford to have him do it. is it something that a reasonable handy person with the right tools can do on their own? where can i buy the pump?
On my 87 It's located right next to the alternator, I don't know where its located on your Vette though. Its real easy to do and you can do this yourself. You can get one at the auto parts store or pay more at the dealer. However I replaced my air/smog pump 2 times and it goes bad because they are remanufactered ones from the auto parts store. The OEM Delco ones last longer. What I plan to do is buy the air pump eliminator so I don't have to deal with this crap. How much is your mechanic going to charge you to do it for ?
he said it could be like 3-400. hes not the type to rip me off, hence why i go to him. nevertheless cant afford that. on l98s the pump is belt driven right? on lt1s and lt4s its electric he told me. not that id know either way. i wouldnt know where it is or what it looks like. have to dive into my service manuals.
Good luck finding a pump, My pump is also bad. I have not been able to find a new one any where, GM does not make them anymore. I have had no luck in the after market.
Let me know if you find one.
There is nothing to changing one out. The trick is finding one. You might try contacting (via email) Travis Sutton ...inst@uswest.net. Sometimes he can get hard to find parts.
I picked up a spare one from one forum guys awhile back "just in case" . I stumbled onto it in the C4 parts for sale. Dumb luck. :D
