Default Crate Motor Question

Can you folks tell me if GM (or anyone else) makes a CA emissions legal crate motor for my '85? My motor is getting tired with 162,000 miles on the original.

Thanks for your feedback.

I have a ZZ4 long block with a 219 Cam, Super ram, Hi flow cat that went though better than stock. With the right tuning you can make any thing pass. Then there are tricks that you can do to.

I am in the same boat since my engine is going south. However, I the base of most of the motors are about the same from an emissions point of view (unless you put an engine with a larger bore in). It is really all in the tuning of the vehicle.

It depends on what your requirements are for the performance.

The heads and cam have a LOT to do with emissions...

bore size can effect emissions, but head and cam designs can minimize it.

The ZZ4 is easy to emission. Good FI, electronics, cats and such... they won't need to know its a ZZ4. Just make sure all the externals are legal either with EO numbers or CARB certs.

GM does have a crate motor that comes with a warranty and is really a pretty good deal to have a new engine for the money that it costs. It is not a high horesepower unit, just a basic replacement long block (new heads). You can get this brand new engine for probably less than it would cost to rebuild yours with new parts. The cost if I remember right is $1200-1400, just depends on where you buy it. Mayby a dealer would match the mail order price, you will only know if you ask. Some dealers will discount right across the parts counter with you. This engine is sometimes called the target master. With this engine you will pass emissions with flying colors and if your engine is really tired and worn out, you will be smiling with the improvement.
If I was to going to replace the engine in my wife's 85 I would put this engine in it.

Will my TPI fit onto the ZZ4 motor? Will my roller rockers heads fit onto this engine or are the ones that come on the engine better? What other components crossover and fit onto the new motor?

How much are these motors going for? Are there any challenges to fitting these into the C4's?

Thanks everyone for your great feedback.
