Default Air Induction Systems

I have been saving my money to buy an air induction system and am not sure exactly which one to get, I have seen these two which look pretty similar both made by Vortex: http://www.ecklers.com/dept.asp?dept...9KXCBRAJAHDJQB and http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=3.12.724. I have also seen the one that takes air in from the front license plate but did not like the look of it. Any comments or suggestions would be great. I have a 87' L98 .

Take a look at the SLP ram/cold air setup.

It requires only a small rectangle to be cut from the bottom front of the radiator shroud and just bolts right up. It consists of a new air filter lid with a scoop the extends down the radiator shroud and out in front of the radiator opening and scoops air in.

It is about $125 from SLP but comes with a stock size K&N so the effective price isn't bad.

I've found it's worth about 5chp over the cut lid with K&N on time slips. I've driven in hard rain and even snow with no problems but stay from deep standing water. However, I do clean my K&N several times a year as it tends to get pretty dirty especially in summer months.

The "Vortex" system is the way to go!

It's made by Breathless Performance Products and I found it to be the best cold air induction system out there!

TurismoVette,

Wish I could help you with personal experience with those induction mods, but I haven't messed with them. In fact, after a lot of reading here on the forums, I feel that they aren't worth much more than a cut air lid and a K&N filter. They do help a bit, but are not exactly "bang for the buck". Anyway, sorry, not much help on your question.

Now I hope you can help me instead. I also have an 87 coupe and I am somewhat new to Vegas. What kind of probs could I expect with visual inspections during smog testing, if I used long tube headers and 2 Hi-flow cats instead of the stock twin pre-cats and the big single main cat? That and would using a air pump eliminator kit be a problem? I am confident my car will pass sniffer tests, but am unsure of passing visual tests with these mods, so what do ya think??

I moved to Las Vegas last summer so I couldn't help you on that. The dealer (Norm Baker Motors) took the car to get smogged when I bought it. I do know that Terribles smog test is free if you do not pass though....

Honestly man.. those high flow cats that you can pick up are really just for show... they do not do much to reduce emisions.. im saying that from experience, i have tested an LS1 with those high flow cats, they failed misserably, a guy that sells/intalls exhaust parts tells me they truely are a visual thing so you dont get fined, im not sure about LT's in nevada but in cali there definetly illegal! hope this helps

Yeah thats pretty much when I got here too. Guess we will be figuring out the smog do's and dont's soon enough!

That's a bummer to hear! Oh well, I have allready received the headers and the Random Tech cats so I guess I will just have to hope for the best. Damn, wish me luck! :banghead:

Now to be back on topic, I hope some people will post their thoughts on the various Air Induction Systems that they have used!

My Friend has a Modded 92 6spd, he put that Forced Air Induction kit on where it comes through the front license plate frame... im sure it added some HP like all intake setups but it wasnt anything crazy.. looks cool! on my 96 it came with a K&N.. i washed it and followed to manual on cleaning/oiling it, then i took the Lid that covers it and cut all the crap off the top... i could feel a little more pull.. not much but it helped and it was free!

something to add... Induction systems can be a little "iffy" sometimes.. on a vette yes.. in some cases you can pull UP 10- 15 hp.. on a restricted old engine, but in most cases i have actually seen at the most a 5hp increase.. im not saying that it doesnt help.. ofcourse it does! but you have to think those systems... costing that much money is i little much, i would definetly go with a K&N filter... they flow ALOT better than stock and last for life.. it pays for itself. Maybe think about making your own induction system or put that 200-500 dollars to something else.. like RR's, or exhaust... ect. Just my 2 cents..

After looking at it closer all it really looks like is a K&N filter with a clear box around it. Maybe I can take the filter off one of my shifter karts and build a nice little container for it???? Probally better to spend $300 on some chrome engine parts... Thanks
