Default EGR Pipe Heat Shield Question?

I have replaced 4 EGR pipe heat shields in as many years. After three hours of driving, the new GM shield turns dark brown :mad I guess the replacement shields are not manufactured as well as the original factory ones. The one that came with the car looked better after 16 years than the new ones look after three hours. What can I coat the pipe with before installing another shield that would absorb or block some of the heat? I'm thinking of coating the inside of the pipe with ceramic header coating or wrapping the pipe with header wrap before installing the new shield. It's only a $20 part but it makes the engine compartment look aweful. BTW, I also bought a new EGR pipe this time so any coating would stick to it properly. Thanks for any help.

My egr tube had a flame proof sock on it that was tattered to hell. I decided to toss the works away and make block off plates. Future valve cover removals will be a snap and I no longer see that ugly thing. I don't know if thats an option for you but it does get rid of the eye sore.

I put a new shield on from MAD a couple years ago and it still looks as good as new

I replaced my pipe & heat shield (they are integral in '88) about a year ago due to the tattered covering and the replaced GM unit still looks new and shiny. Of course my heat shieldds are in tact and I run a 160 deg stat. to minimize under hood temps.

I gather there are no leaks in the EGR pipe but do you have the exhaust header heat shields in place?
What temp thermostat do you run.
Are you possibly getting excessive oil vapors from the valve cover breather near that pipe?
How is high RPM performance (thinking the pre-cat on the right side may be clogged)?

Same thing here exactly, also have an 86. Took the tattered one off, put new OEM one on and it was a golden brown in two days. Theres gotta be something going on with the GM part. Next time I'm just going to use aftermarket sleeve.

I took the pipe off, plugged it on the exhaust side. Ripped that stupid silvery-brownish crap off, painted the pipe Krylon semi-flat black and reinstalled. No more ugly quilt-work under the hood.
