my LT4 has 78,500 miles on it.. im assuming it has the stock clutch, my driving isnt abusive im very nice to my clutch! my question is how much life can one expect out of it? With removal of the inspection plate how can i tell if its in good condition?
As you release the clutch get a feel where it engages. If its near the floor where it engages it still good. As it get higher, that means its wearing out. When the trans engages near the top of the pedal travel then it is worn.
Now on my 89 Silverado Z-71, it has been near the top since I bought it with 155,000 miles on it 5 years ago. It now has 181,000 miles and it still is in the same spot.
When it starts to slip after you let off the pedal, RPMs go up but car is not accelerating, then its time to replace. But, by then its almost gone and needs to be done soon.

Our C4s with the hydraulic linkage is adjusted automatically. There is a nice description in the Helms Service manual on it, so you can't tell by pedal height if the clutch is wearing. But you can tell by the amount of hydraulic fluid you put in the res. When she starts slipping, it's worn. When you shift into higher gears like 4th and go to WOT, if it starts slipping you need to start thinking about a change. That's where I'm at now, but my problem was an oil leak.
My 87 4+3 had 177k miles on it when the OD went legs up. Since the transmission had to come out I had the clutch replaced. There was nothing wrong with the clutch. Treat your clutch nice and it will treat you nice. :D

If it is slipping, do it soon. You don't want to know how much replacement flywheels are.

   177K miles??? On a Vette??? WOW, you must really be gentle with that car.
But you make a good point .... the clutch can go in just 10K miles or last 100K on the very same car, it's all in the way it's driven.
Thats why I replaced mine myself with one with a lifetime warranty from Shucks. Heh heh, if I decide to drive like a beast the worst that can happen is a weekend on my back. 150$ Ain't a bad price for unlimited clutch!
