Yes, your ALDL cable should work with most any GM car. Provided that you have the correct Datamaster application for your specific model GM car. Different model and model year GM products require different Datamaster Applications. And with some earlier GM cars your cable may need to be powered up. The later OBD1 cars with the OBD2 connector had a terminal with 12v Battery power, the earlier car with the old styly square ALDL connector did not have power, therefore on those applications you will need a powered cable.

Check these two links:
http://www.akmcables.com/techinfo.htm
http://www.akmcables.com/assembly.htm

At the second link look at the picture on the bottom of the page, it shows a cable with a cigarette lighter power cord attached. I use a similar setup with the earlier cars and trucks.

If it works without additional power its not necessary. Only on some earlier cars. What you can do is to get a auto/airplane power adapter for your laptop, that is what I use. I got mine from Lind to power my Dell during test drives.

Wow, that is strange. I use mine all the time especially when I am doing an extended edit with my Romulator. I haven't had any issues with that at all. What kind of a laptop are you using?

Sony FXA49.. it works fine if I run off of strait laptop battery power.. its when I use the DC/AC inverter in the cigerette lighter that all this happens.. BTW: the laptop is a AMD athelon 4 chip (which I love) I think its 1.2 or 1.4 ghz with over a meg in ram.. it was quite a nice machine a few years ago.. (i still enjoy it for car tuning now - datamaster/PP2/TunerCat etc..etc.//.
