I haven't taken off my MAF, but when I do, is the screen removed by disassembling the MAF? I can't imagine that people would cut it out.
.. Oh, start imagining :D I did it that way. Actually i used a flathead screwdriver and poped a few holes out, then took a set of pliers to the remains. *shrug* who knows if it did any good. It was fun. :yesnod:

According to TPIS' airflow testing, the MAF flows 529 stock, with the screens and heat sinks in.

With screens out it flows 711 and with the heat sinks out another 39.

With all the twists and turns that the air has to make to just get from the MAF to the valve, I doubt that there's much straightening of the airflow going on anyway.

Horzonally into the plenum, then verticle to enter the runner, then vertrically downward through the runner curving as it goes, then horizonally again through the intake manifold and finally another downward incline verticle curve to reach the valve. Pretty tortuous route if you ask me.

I've got four sets of those things in my toolbox! Two each from a LB9 Trans Am and the Vette. Never had a problem.

scientific results:

'96 LT4, all dyno runs with wideband, pains taken to insure consistency in coolant and oil temps.

on my car, removing the screens made no difference on the dyno, at any rpm. it also did not appreciably change the a/f ratio at WOT. according to the real-time scanner, the fuel trims remained the same at idle and cruise.

given no perceived or measurable difference, i would have preferred to keep it. however, i unwittingly damaged it during removal, and so have run without it since.

Sounds like you are referring to the L98 MAF, which is totally different from the LT1/LT4 unit. The latter only has one screen, and no heat sinks.

People get too wrapped up in flow numbers without understanding what they mean at the entire intake system level.

The more optimistic claims are for about a 5 hp gain. The flow increase reported is from 529 cfm on a stock stock L98 to 711 cfm and this results results in only a claimed 5 hp increase by most reports.

The 5 hp increase indicates that the as installed flow increase in a real functioning intake system was no more than about 7 cfm.
