( HEADER PROBLEMS) Super Comp Hookers burn up spark plug boots
:banghead: I have these Super Comp headers on my 84, anyways first I had to modify the collector on the drivers side to prevent it from burning a hole into the transmission tunnel and leaving enough room for the linkage. Anyway now the problem is that number 5 spark pluh boot keeps getting burnt by the header pipe and causes the engine to heat up and run at higher temps, arcs to the header through the boot, plus the performance just sucks. The engine stumbles and runs very poor when it burns through the boot. I tried using a spark plug boot, works great for 40mins of city and freeway driving but after that it melts. It does all of this even though I have the accel short spark plug on that cylinder.
What should I do to it now? Is their a special boot thats not that thick on the sides to get burned up? Or is their a special spark plug and boot that I can use to prevent this from happing all the time?

Re: ( HEADER PROBLEMS) Super Comp Hookers burn up spark plug boots (Light84vette)
Summit lists a couple of different brands of plug boot protectors. They're made from fiberglass and slip over the boot like a sock. The ad says they will withstand temps. up to 1200 degrees F. There is another company that makes ceramic spark plug boots, but those are expensive.

Well, 2 things. The fiberglass spark plug boots are the ones to use...anything else is a waste of time and money. Also, I think the problem is that you have the straight plug heads. I would bet those headers are designed for angled heads.
Re: ( HEADER PROBLEMS) Super Comp Hookers burn up spark plug boots (Light84vette)
If you have a summitt catalog, some stuff is listed on page 87 of their jan-feb 2004. Design Engineering inc. is a manufactorer of a plug wire sheath. 6" long and 3/4 in diameter pack of 4 is 7.99. part number is DEI-010409. :steering:

Who makes these Fiberglass plug boots? Plus should I use header wrap and wrap it around the headers and maybe use a sheild?
Yes, use header wrap in that area and get the fiberglass boots , I used them with my Dart heads and the combination of the two worked well on my # 5 and # 4 plugs.
