Default Valve cover Gaskets-Help!

With the search feature not working I need to ask about changing the pass side valve cover gasket is there and easier way than what they lay out in the service manual? If I take the egr tube loose at the manifold will it move enough to get the cover off?? If I can get it loose the bolts are really tight!! Tnx!!

I doubt that you can slide the valve cover forward until it's raised up to clear the rocker arms.

That will likely require you to remove the EGR tube.

Had to remove EGR tube completely,,, not hard on my 87, just sprayed Blaster on the night before and let it sit,,, bolts came out easy... and was a good time to replace the heat sheild wrap.... also removed the metal tubing there to allow for more room... besides the normal plug wires..

The EGR tube on my '86 is attached to the intake manifold by two Torx bolts and it is attached to the exhaust manifold using a crimped clamp. Basically you are joining two round pipes with the clamp. Once you remove the two Torx bolts, the EGR pipe has some play in it and it should pivot away from the valve covers.

If you have to remove the EGR pipe, be prepared for alot of cursing and swearing :mad The work area is very confined and cluttered and I cut up my knuckles pretty good. I ended up using a Dremel with a cutting disk to cut the clamp off and a special crimping tool to install the clamp. Let me know if you need the part number for the tool if you go that route. Hope this helps.

I was able to finally get the bolts out and moved the tube out of the way and got the cover off. I'm painting it and will put it back together tomorrow the engine's going to look a little strange for a while with one painted valve cover! I will get the other one done shortly the pass side is leaking and needed to be fixed, I also noticed I have some coolant on the manifold back there so I have to find where thats coming from also. The guy who designed that tube should be made to change valve cover gaskets!! I would imagine he would have designed it a little diffrent!

Thanks for the help!
