I have an 85 with stock wheels. I just got a set of Pilot Sports at Costco and the tire guys there can't seem to get them balanced. They've tried 3 times now. They get a little closer each time but it's still not right.
I can see that it looks like the wheel is being mounted eccentrically on the balancing machine (Coates Computer balancer) because I can see it wobble when it spins up.
Does anyone have any experience with a Coates machine and have any advice I can give them? I'm about ready to just have the Chevy dealer do the balancing because they did a great job on my Comp TA's last time.

Re: Tire balancing problem (Jim Sitton)
Or, there are a few shops that have a machine that puts the tire in the most advantagous place on the wheel and then balances it. Don't know much about them yet, haven't seen one in action. But yes, check for a bent wheel too.
I don't think the wheels are bent. They're not wobbling laterally, looks more like an out of round condition and they all do it. Everything was smooth as glass with the Comp TA's on. I think they're not mounting them to the machine properly.
The second time they balanced them the guy said that for some reason they were all off by the same amount. That told me they were probably just screwing it up.

yeah, its Costco .. what do you expect? its like going to sears for tires. just some kid (me for a while) was doing that stuff. If you want a good job done.. i dont think thoes places will suffice.
Yeah, I know. I was hoping that maybe someone on the forum had some experience with the machine and could come up with some magic combination of cones/adaptors that I could ask them to use and fix the problem. I guess I'll just have to forget about the free lifetime balance and rotation that's included with the purchase and find somebody that knows what they're doing.
