I wouldn't say that my 86 has a hard start problem, but It does spin over more that it should before catching. Also , It doesn't matter if it is hot or cold.
I had a leaking injector and had them all cleaned and flowed by Rich @ cruisin performance. I have also done the following: New cap, wires, plugs, rotor, cleaned TB , new IAC, set tps volts to 0.54. The car idles as it should @ 700 rpm but it is very slightly rough. I checked compression while changing valve seals and it's OK. I hear the Fuel pump come on as it is supposed to for ~2 seconds when the ignition is turned on. I can crank it up, shut it down and restart with exactly the same result . So I don't think it is fuel pressure. Fuel pressure leak down is OK.
Despite all of this , that %$#&^% motor is determined to spin over for about two seconds no matter what I do. Car runs great otherwise. Anybody want to take a crack at this one?
whenever i deal with a slow starting engine... first thing i always check is the battery. take it down to your local shop and have them do a load test. How old is your battery? have you ever maintained it? usually slow starts can be associated with weak batteries. If your battery checks out fine next thing i would look at is the starter. Its a possibility theres to much resistance, you would have to do a starter draw test. any shop can do these test for you. Causes of high resistance are heat, long/damaged cables, corrosion. so check all your starting system connections and clean/service if nessecary. As far as your idle, i would check you IACV (idle air control valve) after the most basic things are ruled out then i would start checking fuel.. in your case i highly doubt thats the problem
hope this helps... good luck
New starter & new battery. It turns over very fast. Problem is not starter related. Sorry if my post sounded like it wasn't turning over fast enough , but it is.
I'll jump on this bandwagon too. My '86 starts very well when it's really cold out. But, after it's running and I do a re-start, I'll get a 'good-speed' cranking for about 2-3 second spin before the engine starts up. And, as with dwestsr, same idle characteristics, TPS checked out. I put in a new IAC a couple months ago with no change.
I was searching and found someone post that the 450 base idle was raised to 550 in a Sevice Bulletin. Can anyone back that up? I could go out there and try to re-set to 550 rpm, TPS @ .54, WOT @ 4.65....
