I just picked up valve seals for this weekends roller rocker conversion.
I remember someone say to use all intake seals. I bought the intake and exhaust thinking it's a good thing to have extra lube on the exhaust valve stems. Is my thinking wrong or is there advantages to using all intake seals.
Advice needed.
Here's a pic of the felpro seals. They come with the "O" rings also.
Thanks
That's exactly what I used on my engine, they've worked fine in the hour I've run the engine. (Stuck in the middle of winter here, salt, snow ice, just ugly stuff out there) Did you see the link on the FelPro site about valve seals, it may help you. http://www.federalmogul.com/cda/cont...6_7501,00.html My '89 had no exhaust valve seals, the FelPro umbrella style should work fine for me, the exhaust valves are hotter, maybe that's why they have different seals. One little thing that may help you, be sure you have the spring and retained compressed before you slide the top O-ring on, I didn't and had to redo some of them because it slid down the valve and wouldn't seal then. You installing new springs since you'll have it all apart?

i did not use the seals that came with kit.. got special ones from engine rebuilder .. i believe they were like the ones on the left....but not exactly sure so do not quote me
I only use factory type seals now, and I use the intake type seals on both intake and exhaust.
I usually get new seals from the local cylinder head repair company, (Dover Cylinder Head, here in Jax)
I have used teflon/poly seals before only to find out they last about one seasons worth of drag racing...as in they will be shot in less than a years worth of street driving.
The best seals you could use are the selas that come on the Lt1's. Its a metal case with a rubber/teflon coating on the inside. If someone can post a pic you will see how they are different and much better as a seal. They are very cheap from the dealer and I would only recomment them.
I can't find a picture, but I use Comp Cams 503-16 which are 11/32" Teflon Seals. They have the metal band around the outside of them and you have to machine the tops of the valve guides to fit them.

Did you put them on all 16 guides ?
From what I understand, restricting too much oil on the exhaust valves can induce more wear. With the lack of lead now this seems even more important.

Good Luck,

My mechanic has a set of these that he wants to install in my L98 whenI get the cam/valvetrain work done. He said the seals on the L98's that came from the factory are horrible, and tend to go bad very early on. Is this really true, and are the LT1 seals vastly superior & can be installed easily?

I think you guys might be referring to the Lt4 seals part# 10212810. I might be wrong but have been researching which seals to use on my 87 and these keep coming up! I will be using Manley undercut valves that only have one groove for the keepers, so will need a good seal on both inlet and exhaust valves. If anyone thinks this is a bad idea, please chip in. (I am assuming the valve guide OD is the same on the L98 & Lt1/4) engines. Oh yeah, I think they were about $1.25 each last time I checked. :steering:
