Looks good!
I can fully relate. My 383 is in the same family as your 406, TORQUEY! 1st gear was bye bye very quickly. I always manually shift with the stock shifter. A ratchet unit would be nice. I always liked the quick silver which was in my Z-28 years back. Nice fitting, and you could slam the shifter as hard as you wanted and it'd hit the next gear nicely.
It'd be nice if they made a megashifter, or quick silver for our cars.

Although I (personally) am not a big fan of cutting plastic, I must say that your work looks good! Are you using any sort of shift kit?

Thanks guys.
My tranny was built by pro-built out of california and it shifts great. I mean as soon as the shifter is moved under WOT it hits the next gear like right now. So this combo should be great. I was the weak link before, trying to ease it into the next gear, being ever so careful not to nudge it too far, since as I said with this tranny its would be into the next gear as soon as you moved it too far.
Also its tough to see from the pictures, but the actual height of the shifter handle itself is actually lower than it was stock. So that makes it look more compact, even though the base is raised above the console. With this actual shifter the mechanism is nearly all the way up to the handle, so to get it under the stock console. You should have the handle nearly on the console itself. That I think would feel awkward and look a little goofy also.

That same shifter available for a f-body , 83+ camaro, will actually bolt flat to the original console plate. You just have to support the underside a little better.
And it dosent stick up 5 inches.

Redl98,
Yeah we are going to run the MAF system and see how it does. If we are way off our mark of low 10s, then it might be time for SD system.
We will have to see. But I sure would like to keep the MAF.

I have been thinking of putting the B&M Hammer shifter in my 88 Vette, diagrams show a 4th gear overdrive switch on original swifter for ecm.
What did you do when switching over your shifter for this to function properly for lockup convertor.

Tonight I spent about 2 hours fabbing up the a ratchet shifter in my car. They do not make one that is a direct fit in for our cars, so yes you have to cut up the console. My stock one was getting to the point I wanted to replace it anyways, ratchet shifter or not. So I figured this would be a good time to ruin it or make it better.
So off to the dealership tonight I went. I had a plan I figured would work. It required some minor cuts to the original console then fitting the B&M base to the shifter.
I have some final pictures of the setup. I will take some more detailed ones later. But it turned out great, and man is that shifter about 100X nicer than the original. I think the job turned out really well. Cutting plastic is not the easiest thing to do and keep it straight. Although I think its fine the way it is. I think I am going to get some split trim rubber pieces and put it on the base, where it meets the original console. This will mask any inconsistancies I had in the cut and give it a more finished look. However I think its fine the way it is now. Here are the pictures. Let me know what you think. Can't wait to hammer the gears this spring with no worries about missing gears!!!
