I have an 86 with auto tranny. I don't usually manually shift the tranny but I noticed two things when I do. First the shifter dosen't freely go back into 1st and secondly, the tranny will shift automatically from 1st to second regardless of shifter position . Is this normal or is there something wrong with my shifter? All other tranny functions are normal. Is there an adjustment I can do on my shifter?
Thanks for your help.
Thanks , I thought that mine was not working and needed adjustment. Where do you access the cable adjust , under the car or do you need to remove the consol?
before you do that check the boot when i got in a new one it would not drop into 1st so i pulled it for a little bit and soften of the leather and that did it.
Yea, my shifter boot was too tight too; so, before going under the car work the boot out of the way, hold the shifter firmly back into 1st gear and do a WOT burst to see if it holds gear.
Don't all stock trans have a function where they will up shift at a preset point overriding the selector position.
This is why you use a "SHIFT KIT " to bypass this feature. The Vette trans is probably programmed to upshift later than passenger cars but it will still do it.
