Default Tilt Column Movement?

In our 94 the tilt column easily moves from its center line towards the 7-8 o'-clock direction. It does it in all positions of tilt. Is this normal?

It's a sign of wear in the pivot mechanism. Typically a result of the driver using the steering wheel as leverage to get out of the car. Mine was this way when I bought it - I haven't fixed it, but I'm careful not to pull on the wheel as I get out.

BTW, I'm also careful not to use the center console lid as leverage either - don't want to ruin that also. You have to be a contortionist to get into and out of these cars.

Yep, your coupler in the steering column is wearing out. Part is very expensive to buy and even stupid expensive to have fixed. I paid GM a dash under $1K to fix this issue on mine when I was a newbie. I'd attempt a fix myself before hiring the work out again.

There are two bushings inside the steering column which are wearing and cause this movement. The wheel has to be diassembled behind the air bag to get at them. The bushings themslves are not expensive but the labor is. I had them replaced by GM at around $200 parts and labor. After two years, they are loose again in one positon of the tilt. There is a thread on this forum somewhere on how to replace these bushings by yourself.search feature using key

the Search function isn't working to well on this site =\

anyone have the wear-parts part numbers?

and anyone have a direct link to any thread that deals with this and a fix?

I read through the Tech Tips, but it was just Tips, nothing real explanatory on getting through things without the use of GM special tools.

There are four base bolts that loosen with age, and using the wheel for leverage.. In order to access them it requires several special tools and the know how to use them... the unit has to be taken completely apart to repair it....Carry in units run 75 dollars here in my shop... You should be able to find someone in your area that can do them properly(there are quite a few who don't)... Hope this has been of some help

So far, what I've gathered is that the pot-metal colum assembly that is hinged by two pivots wears, and a set of bolts loosens.

I could get the GM parts no problem. I presume aside from replacing the parts, when installing the new screws or other support bolts you use LockTite on them?

I have the shop manual, and have studied the assem/dissassem, and i could get as far as getting the column out of the car and the steering wheel off. Beyond that, I don't have the correct tools or pullers to go any farther.

If my research in the area prove fruitless, could I possibly ship you the column for a rebuild?

If so, shoot me an email: copper_trace@yahoo.com with your contact info and I'll keep it on hand if I can't find anyone competant enough around here to do it.

thanks,

I had the same problem on mine also. So intead of doing the expensive repair I bought a whole new column off Ebay for 60.00. It was out of a vette that had 30k on it. I replaced the whole thing in about 2 hrs. Worked perfect. :seeya

There are two different kits from GM to fix this problem. They have different size pins and springs.
26059718 & 26002678

Cost is about $40. and about 4 hours labor to install them. I had them put in my 92 about 3 years ago and no problems ever sense.

Yep,its the joint at the pivot.Ive always been careful not to use the wheel as I get out of the car.The sad thing is,when I was younger I could jump right out of the car.Now ive got the seat RAISED all the way up.Its not so much as jumping out of the car anymore as sort of opening the door and kind of rolling out :lolg: The best spot to use for leverage is the console in front of the lid.You really dont have any choice, you gotta push somewhere...............
