i want to wire them in with the headlights so when i turn on the headlights the shifter lights up.
oh dear god

If you're going to do that, you are going to have to tie into a wire that is controlled by the headlight switch. Based on my service manual it's a yellow wire for the headlamp control, or the brown wire controlling the parking lamps when the switch is turned.

Have fun tearing the dash apart.

You can tap into the wire that is used to light up the fog light button. Pretty easy to get to.

You know what, if you can do it, more power to ya. I'm tired of all these (politically correct), by the book vette guys telling you what you can and can't do. You want yours to stand out from the thousands of boring lookalike vettes out there that you can't tell one from the other. Good look on customizing yours how you want! :mad

stuart, if you need any help, i'm gonna be wiring up my shift light friday afternoon sometime, you are welcome to come by. i have all the stuff needed to do it, and the wires shouldn't be too hard to find with the voltmeter. just drop me an email or pm on the boards if you wanna do that.

Wouldn't there be a radio wire controlled by the lights?

You should have a auxillary power plug in the center console for a cell phone to be hard wired.
does 86 vettes have these? and if so where is it exactly?

Brandt (96Lt4) had one in his old GS i think it was. check this thread out. he had someone wire his up, and apparently the guy wired it through the wires in the rear cargo area. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=466584
