Hi all! I'm considering replacing the mufflers on my 85 with OEM Walker mufflers. The ones on it now are original but the previous owner cut holes in the muffler to make the "dummy" pipes into "real" pipes.
My goal is to get back to the stock sound, which should be more pleasing--more of a growl, not as boomy and less resonance.
I'm also thinking about replacing the rear Y with a cross-tube Y pipe to reduce resonance.
Will these changes accomplish my goal? Any recommendations?

Re: Original Mufflers? (85Coupe4+3)
I highly recommend the crossover rear y pipe. Also, make sure the rubber isolators on your rear exhaust mounts aren't deteriorated. That, and tips that protrude at least to the edge of the rear bumper indents will all reduce resonance.
I'm running a high flow cat and straight pipes on my '85, and have very little resonance. It isn't exactly quiet though. :reddevil
Thanks, CC. I've got exhaust tips. But I think I'll try the y-pipe next . . . really it's the resonance that's giving me headaches, not the noise per se. If you don't have resonance with straight pipes, that must be the solution.
By the way, great photo of your '85 with the sunset. Really cool.

Re: Original Mufflers? (85Coupe4+3)
The way the mufflers work, you'll have noise cancellation (destructive interference) at certain RPMs, but extra resonance at other RPMs. You simply can't have your cake and eat it too.
The perforations internal to the muffler, and it's restrictiveness help quiet down the resonance though... something you lose with open pipes.
Open pipes are loud as hell btw, I wouldn't consider it a solution by any means! BTW, the resonance isn't noticeable with the top on, at cruise the exhaust note is no louder than it was with my monza/kbd mufflers (but still loud).
Sorry I wrote that poorly. I meant that my problem might not be the cut open mufflers--it's more likely the y-pipe. But good points about resonance in the mufflers. Wish I could try out several configurations of y-pipe/muffler to see what works. The results from people here on CF seem to vary.
I posted a like inquiry a few days ago. My main objective is to elminate
(or greatly reduce) the resonance at 40-60 mph. I am purchasing the
y with crossover and should have it installed by next week. I will let
you know the results.
I also desire to replace the stock mufflers with flowmasters but I am not
sure whether the sound will be too loud. Have not made up my mind on
this mod.
I have a set of Walker OEM mufflers, 3 months old, look brand new, If you are interested. Let me know or shoot me an e-mail.
I can send pics if you would like. I replaced them with eliminators :D
