I have just bought '87 with 151k and issues with the pressure in the lifters. I was thinking about replacing my heads to the fast burn aluminum heads when I replace the lifters. What else should I do? Is 151k too much for the fastburn heads? I dont want to destroy my rings and I dont want to rebuild the block, but she doenst leak oil and the L98 is furious..........
With that many miles I really can’t tell you what to expect. Rebuilding the motor is always a good idea to make sure you are starting with a solid base, but that is also an expensive idea. My suggestion is to do a leakdown test to see how well your rings are holding pressure. That will tell you where the rings are but you still will not know how well the bearings and other things are.
I think I will have a leak down first. The lifters worry me because they are singing the "low pressure"song. I cant rebuild until summer, should I change the lifters and the cam? What HIPO cam will work? Grand Sport, LT-1, LT-4, etc??
thanks guys,

I would change the lifters and the fuel injectors. Chevy's have a tendency to have a loud "tick" and i believe it is from noisy injectors. If your going to replace the cam I believe you should do the heads too because they work in conjunction with each other to make power. Also if you're going to change teh cam make it count and don't put in an LT1 or 4 cam. The LT-4 "hot cam" would be an option but i don't know if it will fit in an L-98. Comp cams has some good choices as well as Lingerfelter(sp)
The cam I used from comp cam works well in the stroker.. It idles like the stock cam (due to the bigger cubes), but has numbers similar to the hotcam (A tad bigger with equal rocker arm ratios). It is available for L98's! My Machinist had recommended that I dont replace my roller lifters.. I listtened and they ticked.. for the 179.00 bucks new ones will cost you I would replace them..
As for rebuilding the motor.. You could go ahead and buy the heads and run them on your car.. Even when the bearings let go you'll still have them.. (you mentioned you were rebuilding soon anyways).. This way you could enjoy some fun before your rebuild and not worry about killing the engine since your rebuilding anyways!

I concur. Rebuild it better than before. Ive heard that doing a heads/cam mod on a motor with a lot of miles already can accelerate ring wear.
:iagree:
Been there, done that...
My very first car was a hand me down from grandma, a 71 Buick Skylark with a 350... I pulled the heads at 125K miles and had a performance valve job done on them and when I put it back together it ran like it had a different cam in it...
Needless to say, being 16 and not very responsible/mature yet as far as driving goes (grew up on dirt roads watching Dukes of Hazzard :D ) I put my foot in it constantly... Within a month I was burning a quart of oil every tank of gas... :cry It wasn't a problem with the heads/valve guides/seals as I gave the motor to my best friend who rebuilt it, the heads were fine on inspection... The motor was just too tired to take much abuse from the new heads...
151k? Damn. Did you get any paper work with it. Like maintance done or needed.
Was it cheap?
What did you pay for it.?
You don't have to tell me.
Was it well taken care of?
