OK, I pulled the master cylinder off to change the reservoirs and grommets. These need changing because they are degrading and putting "ick" into the fluid. There is a pretty heavy coat is crap in both reservoirs.
The car is a '91, which shares a master cylinder from 88 to 91.
I see there is a master cylinder rebuild kit available. What is included? When is a rebuild kit indicated for these units? It seems to work fine. But I figure as long as I'm there...
BTW, lowest price I found for the rebuild kit is $105. wow!
This is Bill's86Coupe replying under my wifes nic....
Most rebuild kits come with new seals, grommets, etc and sometimes youre required to have the M/C brake piston bore rehoned before you can use new seals.Thats the part on the back of the cylinder where the brake pedal linkage pushes in.
Without making the bore true again, you risk it leaking all over again. If its not leaking, you may be able to install new O rings or seals in there.
Btw,where are you seeing those prices?I got a new GM M/C for about 100 bucks.
It wasnt reman either.I know our car years differ but it sounds like youre seeing expensive prices nonetheless.
:)
The rebuild kit imo is a ripoff. Actually the price of a rebuilt m/c is a ripoff. For the most part the ucup seals wear out allowing fluid past them. I would assume that these seals are about 2 buxs each but can you find the damn things, no. With my rant over I just purchased a rebuild from autozone for 60 buxs.
