I'm not sure when, but I'll install higher stall TC and when I get to
that I would like to rebuild the tranny and install TransGo
shift kit ( probably full manual option ).
My question is; can I do it by myself?
I know very little about automatic trans. and I've never seen
one from the inside ( only the part with pan of ).
I did everything on the engine myself and I really don't like
so called "experts" mess with my car. I don't think that there is
anybody in Croatia that knows much about automatics, and
to send tranny to USA and back would cost me as a new tranny.
Have you heard the expression "Pandora's box"? Seriously, the parts count in a 700R4 is a four digit number and if you don't know what you're doing and have the right tools, even with a factory manual, you're far more likely to create problems than correct them. Having once owned a tranny shop, I've seen (and paid for) the results of a poor rebuild. Shift kit is a different story, because that's an external mod to the valve body and doesn't require you to get inside the unit. Be careful with either - hate to see a Vette down for tranny problems.
I have said this many times before on this forum, but- get the book and read it first. The ATSG manuals are excellent and tell you everything you will need and need to know. They run under $30 (shipping to you would be higher I guess) . I had the same tranny fears a few years ago but decided to go for it when I needed a built 2004r. Local shops wanted $800, I did it for less than half with better parts than they would have used. I have since built t-350's and tore into a 4L60E which is an elect 7004r, its not difficult if you have basic knowledge and follw directions.
I dont know about the video's they offer, but the books are great and VERY detailed. The have all specs, list all tools, and show all assemblies with illustrations that are easy to understand.
MOST trans shops dont rebuild the correct way anyway. Most all of them fail to check ANY clearances, they just remove and replace parts. Down in south west Florida where I used to live there was a shop that was known for performance transmissions. They actually did ALL the rebuilds for a local transmission chain shop ( I know as I watched them drop off and pick up many, many times). When I told them I needed a certain selective washer they said "oh,...you checked that?..." because they NEVER do.
I strongly believe that if you truly want something done right you need to do it yourself. Research 7004r's online, learn what tricks work and what doesnt, buy good parts and use the manual. ALL of the "special" transmission tools are simple to fabricate. Most tools are pictured in the ATSG manual, and if you cant make it there is a part number listed for it to go buy one.
Wow! here it is again brothers, a fellow member helping us through the fear factors. without info like the above we might all be in the dark ages still.

:iagree:
I was affraid that it can't be done but I think that when the time comes
I'll try to do it myself. I'll get the manual first, and go step by step from there.
1) get the manual
2) get tools ( the C-clips are not easy nor is the 3-4? clutch spring)
3) get the basic rebuild kit (comes with every thing)
4) get the "blue" materials clutches
5) I would also upgrade the sprag and sun shield at a minimum
If not, I'm one of those pesky German tranny race shops could do it as well
