Is it possible/a good idea to get rid of that ugly AIR/smog pump? What exactly does it do and what what would happen if I got rid. Providing you guys tell me how to do it and its cheap :D

Nothing would really happen, it just cleans up the engine bay area. It's hooked up to the smog pump (which is for california emissions) and helps get rid of the unused air from the smog pump. So you can do what i did by just taking off the smog pump, you dont need it. Some have said it adds 2hp, but i just did it to clean up some space and get rid of those useless tubes. There's an air pump eliminator kit from Mid America Design for $169.99. It's basically a bracket and pulley, if you skilled in that area and wanted to save money maybe you could fabricate your own. Here's the link...

Good Luck

Just becareful about smog inspections, I used to live in Glendale AZ and can't remember if they did visual inspections or not. Without the A.I.R. pump, your car would pass the sniffer test because its emissions impact is basically for the cold start and warm up phase. Your car will be fully warmed up by the time they hook you up for the sniffer test so eliminating the pump will have no effect on whether you pass or not.......unless they have a visual test to ensure that all smog equipment is still installed :skep:

Fresh air pumped into the headers at start up is like an afterburner and helps to heat up the O2 for closed loop operation. If it won't go closed loop, you won't pass a sniffer test - among other things - so you may need a heated O2 if you eliminate it.

If you're looking for an AIR pump bypass kit don't overlook "Violater"s (Forum Member) piece. The price is good and it is a very strong looking set up at a good price. I just ordered one today. Bob is a good guy and it's gonna be en route tomorrow, already got the tracking #. Look for his post in the C4 parts section

You can make your own pulley , and just keep your AIR Pump on hand to put back on for Emissions.

Here's how to make your own. http://rockfactory.co.uk/car/airpump.htm

Easy enough, but fraut with dramas if you go the way I did and had one made!

Just search for the topic and you'll find all you need to know!

PS; a well tuned engine SHOULD pass your U.S. emmissions laws anyway; all the egr/air stuff really changes is the volume of air in the tailpipe, diluting the reading they do on your car, not actually producing less harmfull emmissions...

:bs The Air Injection Reaction system does exactly what it says it does. It injects air into the exhaust headers, allowing unburnt hydrocarbons to complete combustion. The catalytic converter, is well, a platinum catalyst to help carry out this reaction, and convert some of the fumes into harmless gases like carbon dioxide and H20.

With that said, I have already removed all my smog equipment, cuz I'd rather have a clean looking engine compartment than clean air. Who wants to live forever anyways? :smash:

And not to re-open an OLD debate, but the consensus that to run all this extra equipment uses more fuel hence more pollution...

As a mechanical engineer I knew many years ago said "...pollution caused by this pollution garbage they put on them" there was more (I taped it) but it was funny as crap to listen to...

:yesnod: Well, that's truw also, and it's what I tell my hippie roommate, but well, to say it adds more pollution than it takes away, is stretching it, it's be like arguing that a turning a supercharger robs the engine of horsepower. I'm just saying I'm not trying to justify removing the equipment, I just don't give a damn, or want the big man telling me what I can and can't do with my car. Anyways, we can save this discussion for another thread. :seeya

...Betcha your room mate drive a Honda civic! hehehe

I don't give a rats **** either; it took a lot of double checking to make sure I was removing the right stuff, but yes; tidyness was worth it AND I did notice marginally better fuel economy; tell your roomie that better economy = less pollution!
