I just got in my skip shift elimination kit and must say it was a compleate waste of $20. I disconected the CAGS about a week ago and covered the conector with heat shrink and it worked better then the kit I paid $20 for. I thought the kit may stop the 1-4 light from coming on but it doesn't so I cant see what good it is. If anyone is thinking of buying the kit I recomend saving your money and just disconecting and covering the conector up to stop corosion because the kit is a waste of money. I dont understand what the radio shack fix is all about either why install resistors because it doesn't throw any codes when it is just disconected so what are the resistors for?
Have it programmed out of the computer and be done with it  Then the light will go out.
That will be done as soon as I install my other motor and have the ECM dyno tuned for it. I will just live with the light for now, I am just glad to be rid of the 2nd gear lock out.
I do believe that is the 'kits' only purpose, is to close up both end from any moisture??? So,your solution might be just as good, if not the same exact thing... I paid the $20 , and was happy to do it, because I HATED the 1st to 4th shift.. But, who knows, I may have just tied it up the same way you did had I known.
some of the newer Vette's will throw a code if the CAGS is disconnected.
Well, when I posted a thread about it, last year, I was told that it would, so I bought the kit. I figured it was cheap insurance, and I've never thrown a code.. The light kind of amuses me now.. I see 1st to 4th light up, and laugh at it!!
I also found it is entertaining to have the light come on while the CAGS was disconnected. However, subsequent programming for the 383 got rid of the whole shebang. For $50 you can get a pcmsforless program that should give you additional benefits.
84LT1, what you did was a good thing as well  When I bought my vette, the CAGS kit was already installed. The light goes on (no codes), which will be eliminated when the chip gets recalibrated. And man, I agree, having CAGS (in the other vette I had) really sucked, as I do a fair amount of in-town driving, I really hated it! :cry
OBDII will throw codes without the resistor on the harness (or a PCM reprogram to disable the skip-shift relay check). For OBDI cars, all it does is keep your connector clean (as if you'd want to hook this up again!)
