Default Cam for the Super Ram

Anyone out there not running the 219 or the solid roller cam for these intakes? Looking at keeeping my 400 block a hydraulic roller setup and don't see the benefits of a solid roller when I dont have to rev the engine so high. PLus it seems the 219 might be jusut a tad small when you ad a goo dset of heads such as AFR 195s.

Thanks

Its not too small, but you can always use a cam thats in the 220/230 range

I was actaully looking at something in the range of 236/236 with a max lift around 575......

I know the cam is not to small, but the only one I know of that has ran the 219 in a 400 block with SR is me. It could be my serching skills , but I haven't seen anyone yet with a SR/400/219 combo..or any kind of dyno numbers with a before an after, except me:) anyhelp with some direction with this would be cool.

I'm just curious to see how others are doing (aside from ski_dwn_it) and I am at the point where my engine is apart and waiting for me to decide on parts.

Thanks

I believe Ski_dwn_it would know the power numbers for the combo you speak of.

mine and jesse are identicle 406s we were useing a tpis 700-701 solid roller which specks out at 244 at 50 572 lift at 1.5 ratio the only person i knew personally who ran a 219 cam with a 400+ engine was dave (hookedup) which was a 420 ci the 219 is no slouch cam i just do not like hydralic roller cams in general for making power no on these 406s we ran we shifted them at 5200-5300 rpm and thats it i also installed the same 700-701 in forum members name (85vet) which is a 383 ci i anticipate shift point on that motor around 5500-5600 rpm on his combo we are shooting for bottem 11s or high 10s i hope this helps you out

As Cork said, the 219 is no slouch. And I also 100% agree with him that the solid cams are worth some extra power. My Dads 509 same with a solid cam. Later model 509s were converted to hydraulic cams. They showed a drop of 20hp and 21ft-lbs on a rather tame 9:1 compression motor.

Solids are a sure gain over a hydraulic, they do require an occasional re-setting. But after hundreds of 1/4 mile passes last year, mine only needed re-adjusted 2x. Once was after I figured the motor was broke in, and the next was ~3/4 of the way through the season. The way I look at it is its a good idea if your racing to pull the valve covers off and inspect everything, even if you have a hydraulic cam. This is just a damn good reason to motivate yourself to do it. Not to mention, setting of the solid roller to valve lash is MUCH MUCH easier and more precise in my opinion.

Just some added things to think about.

I foresee 85vet's car doing every bit of what Cork says it will. Low 11s with no problem. And with his much better heads than we had on our 406s, I would not be surpised to see 10s out of it.

Ok, so you guys are saying basically the reason you went with a solid roller was just for the added HP?...

and thanks for the comments.

Ski, what heads is 85vert using out of curiosity?..

My heads are AFR 195's hand ported by Total Engine airflow. As Corky and Ski note, I am expecting to have fun this season. :D
