If the TPI chokes the engine so much, why do we stay with it,,, why dont we convert to a carbrated system.... What does it take to convert over to a carbrated system????????????
I mean it seems like we port and port and pinch and pinch to get every little bit out of these things, when we could run a carbrated engine and performance part are so much cheaper........
Ah..... We stay with it because any alternative I know of is expensive$$$
It's not legal to change to a carb most places, and they don't have the driveability, mileage, or emissions control of EFI. It sure would be easier, and cheaper like you say. I've got 3 QJs setting in my garage now. Personally I wouldn't even waste my time on the stock TPI. I'll wait and replace the thing. JMHO.
:chevy
Nothing wrong with the L98 TPI, it is just tuned for lower rpm power. You want high rpm power? Then just add a superram. Going to a superram or to a carb both require a change in intake manifolds. No reason to ever consider a carb again :)
I like the lower PRM power,,,, And I dont plan on Heavy modding my car that much,,, but i hear so many people talking about what they want to do to make HP and just seems that carb is the way to go..... Hell I dont know
:iagree:
We L98 owners have two easy (though not necessarily cheap) choices:
top end - mini ram
low end - modified TPI
I like the strong pull out of the blocks so will stay with a modified TPI.
Also last season I was chatting with a guy driving a carbed GTO who mentioned that he would need to mod his carb to take advantage of the cooler weather. However our EFI cars adjust automatically; for me that's another reason the stay the course.
With a Long Tubed runner that gets 20ish mpg, starts in all weather pretty decent, idles pretty decent and still delivers 340 crank net hp. That number is with stock heads and cam. I surely don't think they are all that bad. What were the old carbed cars putting out in 1970? 370 gross hp with equals about 300-310 net hp. I guess they weren't all that great while they delivered their 13 mpg.
Yes they are restrictive, but with minor mods can be made to be pretty quick. Vic'89 comes to mind.......with minor mods, still retaing stock heads/cam he has gone 12.7x in the 1/4. Not too shabby for a restrictive TPI
Prior to 1972 (or was it 73) all engines were rated differently than they are now so that 370hp claim in 1970 was closer to 300-325 hp by todays standards.
i'll be in the high 12's when the track opens up in 2 weeks with light mods and a 2.59 geared A4 with stock stall.
personally with the 2.59 gears i have no problem running C5's on the top end. i've ran several LT1, LS1 Fbods, a few C5's and beat them from 60 to 130 mph. even ran an 01 Z06 from 60 to 130 and he only got me by 3 car lengths. my TPI is bone stock and still running the stock AFPR for now.
