Are you sure you're interfacing with ABS module? Should be a stored code or the light has found another power/ground source. GM's had some problems with corrosion through '98 on some models. Here's part of the Bulletin:
Condition
Some owners may comment that the ABS light is on with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) 46 and 86 set (rear ABS channel will not move) as current or history. (DTC's 46 and 86 will be displayed as C1246 and C1286 on 1997 and 1998 model year vehicles).
Cause
A condition exists where the ABS motor pack gear (pinion) will bind on the motor armature shaft causing the motor not to move when commanded by the EBCM. This condition is aggravated by light corrosion between the pinion and shaft. Therefore, it may occur more frequently when the weather is hot and humid.
Important: Other EBCM and ABS motor pack concerns can also cause this condition, but they are not as common as the above cause.
My own experience is that the above condition is intermittent and the light will go away when you cycle the ignition (which cycles the ABS), though sometimes it takes 2 cycles to get it to work and turn off the light
Service ABS. It does the diagnostic, and will work for a minute or two, then the light comes on and no more abs. It does it without the car moving as well. I have already tried a new ABS module, but to no avail. Is there a way I can trace down the problem?
If the ABS light is coming on because the wiring to the light or the dash is getting power from another source, you could always try to see if your ABS is working by finding a safe place to slam on the brakes. Otherwise, you need to find out what the code is - are you using a scanner capable of reading ABS codes?
I know the ABS is not working. I don't have a scanner, I have jumpered positions on the aldl(?), and get no codes. Would I have to take it to a dealer most likely? I really don't like dealers. :reddevil
Afer looking thru my 87 service manual, the ABS section talks about using a ABS diagnostic tester that is hooked directly to the ABS module to get any error codes. For some reason, ABS codes are not shown in the book!!
The ABS Module monitors these items: Modulator Valve, Control Module, Lateral Acceleration Switch, 4 Wheel speed sensors, the wiring harness and relays, and supply voltage.
Based on the repair procedures in the manual, you will have to find a shop that has a diagnostic tester that will connect to the ABS system. It looks like the CCM does not store any ABS codes. A dealer should have a tester, but any good repair facility will have test equipment for early GM anti-lock brake systems.
I had a problem like this on my 85. I would be driving along and the light would come one here and there as it pleased. My ABS still worked fine it was just the light that was messed up. There were no errors in the comp read out either(for the ABS). The weird thing is after I replaced a couple of things and had no codes period coming out the light thing just cleared up????? I talked to some people and they said that the older vettes had problems with that ABS light just turning on and off at random. If you clear all the codes in the comp the problem should be solved. (or at least worked for me :p: )
You need someone to plug into the ABS controller behind the drivers seat. Your ABS won't work until you fix the probem, so you are stuck with "regular" brakes for now.
:banghead:
After writing this I thought the same thing....it was my truck (01) with the ABS light the Vette had the check engine light issue......ah whats the realdifference anways :lolg:
I've already done the grounding pin things, no codes. I did the one for the abs light to flash, and the one for the display in the speedo. Each time, all I get is code 12.
