I live in penna. with the new emmissions law...I have a 89 vette with no cats and of course it's inspection time and you need the emmission test first before inspection...my question is ecklers has a front y pipe with cats for 249.99 and I was wondering if it would pass the emmission test...I wanted to cut and weld at the y because I have dual straight pipes....my other option is to purchase the y pipe with the 3 way cat and the rear y pipe...either way I'm reaching deep in my pocket...for the year vehicle they can only do a visual of the vehicle for tampering and check the gas cap...any suggestions would be helpful
It sounds like the "visual" would preclude duals or even a pre-catless front Y so your options would be:
-install a stock front Y, hi flow cat & cat-back
-have fake pre-cats welded over a hi-flow front Y
-pay off someone at inspections
Unless your engine is putting out close to 400chp you would not notice any drop if you could go with a modern 3-stage hi-flow cat and a good front Y.
Of course you could always just switch systems for inspection, assuming they are done every two years or so.
BTW, MAD also has that stock looking front Y and it looks like it may be mandrel-bent. But it only has a 2 1/2" outlet and I believe the cat is a slip-fit 3" inlet.
If Trenton, NJ isn't too far, you might give a holler to Mufflex (link on my site). They run a custom exhaust shop and do supurb work at a great price. Maybe they can come up with a cost effective good solution for you.
