Do water pumps leak intermittently. Ran the car a couple weeks ago and had a small puddle of anti-freeze just under the front of the engine at the pump. Next two times I ran the car, no leak. Is it worth trying a pump lubricant or stop leak. Or, just bit the bullet and go for a pump.
I just replaced the pump on my '90 with a Flowcooler. My old pump "apparently" leaked a bit several months ago and I bought the Flowcooler. My old pump stopped leaking before I got around to replacing it. It recently started leaking again so I decided to replace it with the new one. I could not figure out how it was leaking as the weep hole was dry. As I removed the old pump the cause of the leak became apparent. The mounting bolts were not much more than finger tight and the gaskets between the pump and block were deteriorated to the point that coolant was leaking down the forward face of the block. The old pump was the original pump (150 k miles on the car) and it looks like the age of the pump installation coupled with dynamic stresses of the pump rotation, with attached frisbee, ultimately caused the problem.
I could actually have re-installed the old pump. I did remove the frisbee.
Bottom line is, an apparent coolant pump leak may not be pump failure after all. The bad news is that the pump still has to be removed.
If you need to replace pump and decideon a stock pump Airtex sells brand NEW pumps @ about $55. They are gm pumps with the 8 digit Gm number ground off. Also lifetime guarantee. Hope this helps. (This is an L-98 pump) :lurk:
