Default Heads, removal time estimate

I am considering buying an 86 coupe described by the seller as "needing a head gasket" (coolant in the oil). My original plan was to bring the car to my friend's shop, remove the heads, look for signs of gasket damage, then pull the engine if there were none apparent. However, my friend called me to inform me that the time estimate in AllData for just pulling the heads was something like 14 hours! The estimate for just pulling the engine was around 15. Based on this, I would pull the engine first, then the heads once it's out. I'm told that AllData is usually quite conservative on the time estimates, but I'm just curious to hear how long it has actually taken anyone who has done either of these?

It depends on how used to pulling stuff apart you are and if you're torn one down before. :) I have alldata and I think those 14 hours were for a head gasket job which includes putting the heads back on.

its all about experience, were you goin to do the work yourself or have a mechanic at that shop do it? keep looking around for some more good deals, a blown head gasket is very costly! but you can never go wrong with a vette :) :chevy
