Default Question about heads on 86E engine.....

Question about the heads on my early model 86....It has cast iron heads. Now, can I, lets say put late model 86 aluminum heads on my engine, and all bolt on, and work fine? Were there any other modifications to the block or intake that would be a problem? It seems like most of todays mods are made for the aluminium heads on the L98, so I was thinking of getting aluminum heads for it. Your thoughts please.....

You would be better off saving for another head, if your goals are for a true monster. But the 113s should bolt up fine, you will need new valvecovers, I cant remember what else.

Used L86 or later heads could cost as much as a set of new aftermarket heads. Trick Flow has some very good heads that flow very well. Aftermarket heads can be expensive, (T-F heads run around $1100 at Summit Racing) but they come with all-new parts and machining.

Brand new zz4 heads (113 castings) run about 600 fully assembled from GM.

I have an early 86 and replaced my iron heads with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, 60739. Everything bolted right up with no problem.

Heads were less than $1,000, (Summit) completely assembled with springs capable of .575 lift.

According to Chevy High Performance Magazine, the L98 Vette aluminum heads don't make 200 cfm in flow and aren't recommended.

Of course if you want to port them, that's different, but you've got to add in that cost to the purchase price.
