Anyone have any tips on removing the AC compressor on an 85. The helms shop manual really dosent cover it very well and Chiltons dosent cover it at all, says its too dangerous.
Looks like it is easier to remove bracket than to remove the compressor from the bracket since the valve cover is in the way of a long mount bolt. Any suggestions or experience here? :smash: :smash:
Re: Removing R4 AC compressor on 85 (Southern Comfort)
Its MUCH easier to just remove the bracket. Unless you where to remove a valve cover you aren't getting at least 1 bolt out. I removed my AC system completely, and couldn't get the last rear bolt out without removing the AC lines attached to the compressor. Not sure if that is how it is suppose to work, or my lines where bent funny.
Re: Removing R4 AC compressor on 85 (Southern Comfort)
best way take off passenger valve cover and closest rocker arm toward a/c compressor to remove the last bolt, and its still a bitch to get at, had to do this on the side of the road after compressor seized and melted belt.
Thanks, I think I am going to try to remove the whole bracket compressorand all. Not in to taking the Valve covers off. Maybe change water pump while I am in there. Thanks for the info

I don't believe the 85 is much different from my 86 but I can pull my compressor with the bracket still attached without removing the valve cover.
There are two nuts at the water pump, then there's a nut on the brace that goes from the compressor to the #2 exhaust, and the last one is a torx head bolt at about the 6 o'clock position under the compressor.
The bolt that runs through the compressor for the upper end of the brace can be removed from mine will a little gentle persuasion.
