Security system problem

I bought a 86 coupe a few months ago, and the horn did not work. after some investigation I discovered both horns had been disconnected, and reconnected them. Well apparently they had been unplugged for a reason, because now when unlocking and opening the door, the alarm goes off. I tried disabling the security system all together by removing the fuse, but this also prevents the horn from working.
Any suggestions? :auto: :auto:
I've heard of this problem. When unlocking the door with a key, part of the lock assembly rotates a lever on the switch assembly, theft deterrent. This is simply a lever that rotates during key use and tells the Theft Deterrent System a key was used to unlock the door. Now, if that circuit is not activated, the alarm thinks bad things have happened.
I am assuming you are trying the left door. As a test, lock the door with the electric door locks. This activates the system on a 90. Not sure about your Model Year (MY). Go around to the RIGHT side and try the key. Use key on the lock, open the handle, and see if the alarm goes off. If it does, could be the module not noting the key is being used. If the key unlocks the tumbler, door opens with the handle, and no alarm, I suspect the switch assembly, theft deterrent, left door.
Keep in mind I'm speculating. I did hear about this problem during a Q&A with Gordon Killebrew, C4 guru.
If you have the factory service manual, Helms, head for Chapter 10-Doors.
Let us know. I'm always curious.
Good luck with this repair.

I have an 86 as well, and the switch in my driver's side door does not turn alarm off. The switch in the passenger side does turn off the alarm. Just a bad switch. So until I replace the switch, I just lock both doors manually, and not the power locks. Plug horns in, and just don't use power locks at all unless the engine is already running. Once you shut it off, don't use power locks. Hope this helps...
