VATS sounds like a good guess to me. It will kill everything...

First try your spare key as its pellet contacts are not worn like your everyday key. Next wait 4 minutes and try again, VATS times out for 4 minutes after several unsuccessful tries. The contacts in your ign tumbler that connect to the pellet may be worn. Find the wires from the ign tumbler (on my 87 they come out the steering column at the floor and go under the carpet), unplug the wire at the 2 pin connector and measure the resistance at the wires from the ign tumbler with the key in place. It should measure the same as the pellet. If over 13k ohms, you need a new tumbler which will have new contacts. You can temporarily bypass VATS until you can schedule tumbler replacement by connecting a fixed resistor the same value as your pellet across the wires going to the passenger side (VATS module) with the 2 pin connector disconnected. Don't do this permanently because 99 % of car thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ignition.

wouldnt you think a code would come up with a bad VATS
