Default Testing/accessing the ECM

How do I gain access to the ECM on a '89?
Do I need to remove the ECM in order to test it?
How would you test it with a volt meter, or do they test them at parts stores?
Thanks again!

If you have any codes and want to know what they are do this:
1. Turn the key till the dash lights up but bon't start the engine.
2. Access the diagnostic connector and jumper the two upper right hand corner clips with a piece of wire. This should flash the SES light. That will tell you which codes you have.

I've been told that the ECM can itself be tested.
I have done what you have said and have retrieved a code 42. It doesn't go away by unplugging the battery.
I've further gone and taken out the access panel on the paqssenger side to remove the EMC.
Two wires, one brown and the other orange both with fuse holders were cut.
I'm in the process of figureing out what they are and where they can be attched back to.
