Okay, I bought some wires thinking it would be a quicky. Is there some sort of secret to installing these with out taking out the AC/ Alternator and any other bracket out on a 96 Lt-1.
There isn't any reeal secret other than being able to swear, bleed and otherwise stop every few minutes to try to understand just why you took the project on!!
Driver's Side: remove the belt and alternator and the braces for the alternator. Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket and move aside. Remove the P/S pump (there should be 4 bolts holding it to the bracket) and push forward. Remove the belt tensioner and the idler pulley. There is a small bracket that runs under the 4 wires; remove that. Remove the big aluminum bracket from the front of the block/cylinder head. That should give you easy access to the 4 wires on the driver's side. Remove the wires from theOpti by twisting the boot about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn and pull. You will need to remove all the little plastic clips that hold the plug wires. They are a PITA but you only need to put about half of them back
Passenger side: The wires going into the Opti are easily visible if you remove the center plastic section of the wheel well (above the shick tower). It's a tight fit getting your hand down to the #6 and #8 wires but it can be done. Small hands help here.
Coil Wire. Remove from the coil first and thread it back toward the t-stat housing. Twist the wire until you feel the wire release from the top of the Opti. Go easy here as you don't want the wire to come loose from the metal clip at the end.
When you reinstall the new wires, be sure to use some dielectric grease on the inside of the new wire boots. Makes them go on easier and helps the seal.
On my 93, I did the following:
Remove Belt
Remove tensioner
Remove center portion of wheel well.
With that out of the way, I could see down to the Optispark and could press the new wires on. Also helped when I replaced the plugs to have the wheel well out of the way.
I got these tips from fellow Forum members.
You might want to consider changing out your water pump while you’re at it depending on your mileage. It makes the job of changing out your wires alot easier too.

Good Luck!! Get beer BEFORE you start.
   ok now i know the reason i got an early model c4 with a L98 and regular distributor :D
I had the waterpump replaced at the dealership as part of warrenty work last month, but they want 300 and change to replace the wires. I told them never mind.
Thank You all very much you have been very helpful, this will be a project over a long weekend. Thanks again
I know this is an old posting, but I found using search and wanted to bump it. Anyone new to the C4 (especially late run models) and who wants to replace their own wires should read this. Good description!

I couldn't agree more, remove your Water Pump"allows for easier access to distributor" and give it a thorough inspection and if theres even the slightess hint of a leak REPLACE it.
Wow, this thread may have just changed my mind on doing my wires!!!!!!!!!
I did it once myself on my 92 and if i ever need to get them done on the 96 i will drive it to a mechanic and get im a few beer's over is invoice for that PITA job...
