Muffler question
I want to modify my exhaust system, I can afford to spend about $300...my question is would I get more horsepower gain by eliminating the mufflers and having straight pipes versus installing something like flowmasters?
Just eliminating mufflers would be cheaper but about the same power gain as with free flowing mufflers.
However, I would start with a 2 1/2" mandrel-bent front Y and work back to the cat-back. A good local exhaust shop should be able to do both jobs in your price range. Later, round it out with a good hi-flow cat or "test pipe".
You can get the Magnaflows for $335.00 from performance peddler. These are good high performance mufflers, straight through design, stainless steel with true dual tips. They are easy to install yourself and they’ll provide you with a performance gain. They will be somewhat louder then your stock system though. Just my $2 worth.
