Default Yet another flowmaster post

There's been alot of talk about Flowmasters and resonance lately. However, not one post specifies which "series" (40 or 50) mufflers they are referring to when discussing resonance. Flowmaster claims the 50 series to be "significantly quieter inside the vehicle" compared to the 40 series, so I'm wondering if most people are referring to the 40 series when they talk about resonance.

I always liked the sound of the flowmasters (but I'm going back a few years when my friend had his 5.0 Mustang). I have no experience with these mufflers on Vettes. I was pretty much sold on the Flowmaster 50s until reading all the comments about resonance, especially when a few posts mention that it's even more pronounced on automatics (my vette is a stock 87 auto vert).

Anyone care to clear up this issue for me? The stock exaust is way too quiet for me and my tax refund has muffler upgrade written all over it :D

Many thanks,
Russ

Well, I'm running 40 series on my '95. Stock cats, resonator in place. Needless to say, they drove me CRAZY, and are currently on the forum for sale section. Others love them, and so didn't I, for the first little while. Then the resonance drove me  . If you want to experiment, and save some $$, mine have about 200 miles on them (yes, your right, I didn't give them a chance to drive me crazy enough), and have LT1 tips welded in place

I run the TPIS custom FlowMaster cat-back but don't know what series they are.

If you are at opening Corvette Challenge event at Raceway Park at Englishtown, NJ on Mar. 13th you can hear what they sound like.

Though some passengers say they are too loud I love the sound though there is some resonance at around 1,600rpm.

40 series here.
Lots of resonance.
Maybe it's cuz I don't have any tips, just the mufflers. And they don't extend past the back bumper. I'm working on that.

I also have the TPIS catback, but with the 4+3, so I shift around the resonance usually, unless I want to irritate the passenger! :jester :seeya
Welcome to the forum, dude, you'll love it!!

I have 40 series on my '91. They do have pretty bad resonance, but it doesn't bother me that much. My tips also stick out past the bumper and that didn't help the resonance at all. If you can deal with the resonance there is no meaner sounding muffler out there. At idle the car has a nice deep tone and at WOT they absolutley scream. :yesnod:

Hey Stick 91!

Yep, there has been alot of Flowmaster talk as of late. I bought the Flowmaster Force II system from Summitt Racing. This is a true cat-back system w/resonator. I believe the negatives about FM are with their 40 Series "mufflers". I have talked with many specialty shops locally and the highly endorse the FM Force II cat-back system. The true cat-back will give you roughly 10 bottom line HP as opposed to, say like just buying the Magnaflo muffler ONLY package.

On the FM Force II, Flowmaster had redesigned their resonator - which comes with the kit to be more "resonance effective" at mid range speeds.

Of course, alll this being said, it all comes down to personal preference. Let's put it this way, I want something with "bark" but not too much "bite"

FYI......Summit Racing. 1-800-230-3030. Mine is the P/N 17217 for 93 LT-1 / LT-4 applications. $ 537 & change. Good luck bud!
