I have an early 86 A4 with 2:59 gears. Current mods include K&N, cut lid, Lt headers, 2.5 in Flowmaster exhaust, no cats, descreened maf, nkg plugs, and a 160 thermostat. Future mods include Accell lower intake, AS&M runners, Adj fuel press. regulator, and 52mm throttle body. Would this be enough to get 13.0 NA without going into heads and cam?
It looks like you're definitly on the right track. You've got the exhaust taken care of, so you're set in that department. You've said that you already have the intake, runners, and AFPR planned.
I would probably keep the stock TB. I don't think theres a need for the bigger unit until you add displacement. The money you save on a TB you can put towards a higher stall torque converter and a bit steeper gears. A 2500 stall converter netted me about .2-.25 seconds in the quarter. I'd probably also consider going to a 3.07 rear, but that sort of opens a can of worms, beacause if you're going to be changing the ratio it would be a good time to swap in a Dana 44. If you're going to be using drag radials a dana 36 will likely be on borrowed time.
The only other issue you have is the iron heads (I believe early 86s have iron heads). I'm not sure how much they're holding you back, but I'm surethey don't flow as well as the later 113 casting alluminum heads.
With these mods you'll be very close to 12s I would think. I have similar mods and my best times are in the sig (still have stock exhaust manifolds though). Also check Vic'89s mods. He has similar mods to my car, except has long tubes, and has run a best of 12.7x.
JJ 86,
I think you've laid out a nice plan to get some more umpff from your '86.
The fact that you are running the 2:59 gears...maybe a slight drawback, but I believe the other mods will overcome the gears, and get you to the 13.0 times you are seeking.
I'd also say at this point, should you do those mods you mentioned, and go to a 3:45 gear...I'd say 12.6 is reasonable, and attainable. :yesnod:
Good Luck!!
You should see about 15chp gain with that intake mod.
You might also try the cut back spark plug electrode mod for about 8chp gain, details on my site.
Instead of the TB change you might try the March Power & Amp pulley set.
To get into 12s you will need to realy hook it up and have some good weather. You will also likely benefit from raising the shift points to stay in the lower gears as long as possible during a pass. Check out Vic'89's mods and results; though he has 3.07 gears the data will give you some idea on what to expect from the mods.
Port work is always a plus, but with your setup you may see minimal gains. It just depends on how much it's going to cost to see a few more horses. One thing to consider since you are going to have the manifold off already, is maybe to go with a bit more cam. I know you said you're not really looking at changing out the cam, but a more agressive cam will only set you back another $150-250 and there is only another couple hours of labor on install once you have pulled the intake.

Man I have not seen 1 bolton Vette on this forum run 12.6's, but I guess it's possible.
The best way to findout how you are running is to take it to the track.
65Z01 has 2.59 gears and his ET is right at 13.0's.
