Are you having tach LED problems?
I was having a problem with my tach readout as it was lit up when the ignition switch was on but when the engine started it would go to "0" rpms. I called a couple of cluster repair services and they quoted between $350-$400 to fix the problem. Someone on the forum suggested I check the coil closely and when I did........suprise! I had a bad coil but it was not dead. I paid $20 for a new coil, installed it and the tach readout works perfectly. If your tach readout sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, check your coil before spending several hundred dollars to have the cluster repaired.

Also, there is a ballast or filter of some kind for the tach on the firwall. My 85's tach dies and all it was was a bad ground where this part bolts to the firewall.

That ballast (actually a capacitor/resistor network) should bolt to an electrical ground. From the factory, it bolts to intake/runners bolt near the distributor. I suggest not altering the distance from the distributor (wire length) that GM specs out. This "ballast" filters out noise from being introduced into the ECM harness.
