Will using a non-nylon retainer (all steel) shaft for the oil pump introduce "noise" to the knock sensor? Is the the non-nylon piece better than the nylon using one? TIA
Nope, you absolutely want to use the steel sleeve, that nylon one is a piece of junk. Many people have found them missing after pulling the engine apart.
Can't be. Takes more money to make two parts...store...assembly. One part (one steel shaft) is easier to assemble; order one part number, etc. Two parts (steel with nylon) takes more work to order and maintain two parts bins than one :lurk:
The steel ones are not one piece though, they are two pieces brazed together. So, it was either to save weight or money, my bet is the money. I am using the steel sleeve and I have no knock on my 383. If roller rockers won't set off false knock, then this definitely won't. You'll also find that the instructions that come with most aftermarket oil pumps say that you must use a steel sleeved pump shaft.
