Default electronic "box" in storage area

so I am preparing the car for the new stereo, and there is silver box in the pass side compartment that seems to have an antenna out on it. is this something for the keyless system, or stereo? (ie, can i remove it). 100% of the bose is gone.

 What year is it?

ABS resides in base of storage cabinet on driver's side in most models.

Personally, I have never heard of anything in the passenger side.

If it has an antenna, I would be carefull what I said while standing near it :D :D :D

Do you have a 95 or 96?? That sounds like it's for the passkey system. There is no radio/Bose stuff back there.

The radio tuner on my 92 is under the dash on the far right on the passenger side. GM could have moved it by 94 but why would there be an antenna?? Did somebody install a LoJack system? What markings are on it?

It's the radio tuner and antenna. GM put the tuner back there for '94-96 as part of the dash redesign for the 2nd air bag, there was no more space in the passenger dash.

The PKE module is high up on the dash behind the DIC display. Antennas for that are in the passenger door and back near the gas tank (on coupes)

:iagree:

Definitely the radio tuner on my '95. Says so in the Service Manual.

:iagree:

Plus the speaker wires plug into it as well. From memory there are three connectors - a large one that connects it to the unit in the dash, a small one to the right of the large one that is for one bank of speakers and another small one just below the large connector for the other bank of speakers. I can't remember if the speaker banks are broken up into front/back or right/left. If you really need to know, I'll look it up in the service manual...

This "box" was placed back there in 93. I had it back there with my base (non-Bose) system. When I replaced the head unit, I took this out. As long as you get an adaptor for your antenna and either run new speaker wires through the car (or tap into this location), you don't need it in there.

The only box on the passangers side on the 94 is the radio tuner. I Just removed my bose system and am positive on this. I removed everything in the pasangers side compartment and installed a 12'' Sub in there.

I would hope the OP has it figured out by now, since this thread is 7 years old.

The op has sold the car by now and has a Porsche and a Ferrari (most likely).
