A buddy of mine gave me a Accel Super Coil HEI. Is it worth putting on. He also gave me an Accel cap & rotor that I posted comments on and got the ok to use. I have a completely stock (for now) 86 coupe with alum heads.
Exscuse my lack of knowledge but what benefits will it bring.
I assume it produces more spark right????????
I replace my old coil with one. Works fine, not sure if it helps any. Most will probably tell you the stock HEI coil is more then enought. If its free why not, can't hurt anything.
It will generate higher voltages but the super coil won't really give you any big benefits unless you have mods that will allow the motor to turn much higher RPM's. A stock L98 is about done at 5000-5500 RPM and a stock coil (and wires) will handle the load. No harm in installing although you can't use the factory cover over the distributor.
BTW does this coil have red and white wires?? That is the one that is used for the Vette motor. The red/yellow wires are for other Chev HEI systems.
C4's like most cars have a switched primary ignition coil. The energy in the spark is: 1/2 L(I squared). To get more spark energy, the primary inductance (L) can be increased, but this will increase the time to build the magnetic field in the coil and it causes lowered spark with increasing rpm. More spark energy can be had by increasing the coil primary current (I), but this will shorten the life of the spark control module which supplies the switched current to the primary. GM made a compromise for full spark through the rpm range and long spark control module life. Who knows what compromise the aftermarket coil maker made? The gap in your spark plugs ionize around 5000 to 6000 volts and when the spark is sustained, the voltage drops to around 100 volts until the spark is extinguished so coil claims of 80,000 volts (or whatever the claim is) have no meaning because the coil never gets to 80 gazzilion volts! You can install the free coil but I doubt very much that you will notice any improvement.
I installed an aftermarket accell super coil on my 85 and noticed a 3 MPG increase in fuel milage and a noticable seat of the pants HP gain! I may have had a weak or damaged (origional) coil but the super coil made a solid performance gain!
Never say never! I also got my coil for next to nothing!
I did not like the fact that I had to remove my stock aluminum plenum extention distributor cover and found out that I could remove the coil from that UGLY :U plactic Accell shell and install the super coil like a stock coil!
Hell,, if you can get it for free,, stick it in!!! It sure wont hurt anything! To make it work a lot better, purchase an aftermarket HEI module which will increase the dwell.
