Default Need help: Wheels & tire wear

Guys,

I took my used A-mold OEM rims to a local wheel shop yesterday.

1. Is it possible for a wheel to be true enough to balance but still screw up tire wear? this shop wants extra to true the rims, not because they won't balance but because they'd supposedly cause excessive tire wear.

I have a crack at the back of a 3rd rim which was already supposed to have been restored by an out-of-state shop. The crack is at the back of the rim, (facing inside) and is not at the sealing surface (a bump) yet. It runs in the direction of the width of the rim (9.5")

Do cracks like this really propagate when you hit a bump?

Anybody have any experience with a cracked rim??

Thanks,
Andy

If you really have a crack (not just in the paint/chrome but in the aluminium itself) then it needs fixed or replaced. cracks only get bigger.

the best advice I can give is to get a second opinion.
a wheel that runs out so bad that the tire wears funny should be easy to spot by lifting the car and spinning the wheel.
I wouldn't try fixing a bent aluminium wheel, it would never be as strong as before (if physically straightened) and would probably need extra weight to balance it (if they just machine the inside face), besides it would cost as much as a new wheel to do it right.
