My cruise control doesn't seem to work... On second thought, neither do my 4-way flashers. Is this a fuse issue, or is it indicative of something bigger?
Engine vacuum is used by the CC servo to pull and hold the throttle cable. If you have a vacuum leak in the line that goes to the servo then the CC may work erratically, or not at all. Two potential vacuum problems on your '96 are:
There's a vacuum check valve/tee that's located beneath the passenger side fuel rail cover that disintegrates due to the heat. When this happens (and it's a matter of when, not if) the CC, and usually the ability to switch the air to different vents, is affected. The part is available at the dealer and is cheap.
There's also a switch mounted behind the brake pedal that releases the vacuum to the servo, disengaging the cruise when you step on the brake. I believe that on the '94 and latter C4s the bracket that holds the switch is plastic and prone to breakage. This was the case in my car and it drove me nuts until I figured it out and replaced the $7 part (ACDelco part# 3537079).
I haven't paid attention to how the turn signal stalk is set up, but on my Taurus, I had issues with the right blinker, 4 ways, and wipers, all on the stalk and the part it went into. It was sold as one piece and it solved all the problems at once. Because the cruise is on the stalk and the 4 way switch may be part of the unit, it could be the cause of the problem. Just a thought before you start searching for the always fun vacuum leak.
When my cruise control began to go out, the cruise would "engage", then fade. My problem was a vacuum line that had sprung a small leak. My leak was at a "T" connector on the driver's side near the top of the wheel well. I have a '91.
