I've been having problems getting my 85 auto to go into closed loop. (It never does!) I've change my 02 sensor and just seem to be striking out. It's been suggested to swap out the ecm. Well I found an 85 ecm on ebay which I picked up cheap and now want to swap them. It's from an 85 4+3. I'll switch the main chip but is the Mem Cal chip different? I've gotten an error telling me he Mem Cal chip is missing but I'm wondering if they are different?
85s do not have a memcal per say. They have a carrier with just a chip placed inside the plastic carrier.
perhaps the chip is missing. OPen it up and see what you have inside. There should be two I believe small bolts that hold a small plate on. Remove that and see what is inside.
NO other codes, just 52 CalPak missing. Yes, I am using an auto xray to scan it. Major problem I have is that it's always in open loop! Once in a great while it will slip from open loop running rich to closed loop running lean! It is very rare though. I'm stumped at how to fix it! Mechanic said drop it with him for a week!! Don't think I've got the cash!
What you describe happened to my 85 once and it turned out to be a blown fuse. It ran in open loop with the check engine light on until I replaced the fuse. Check the ecm and inj fuses.
Could the Calpak be in the socket backwards? The notch on the Calpak should match the notch on the socket.
Are you sure it is not going into closed loop, have you used another scanner? one other point, right themostat in the engine, also is your burn off module working correctly? check that out before you go too much furthur. Your 85 does not have the relays behind the battery but a module behind the instrument panel on the pass. side. When you shut the engine down the wire in the MAF should get red hot to clean the wire, check that out. You need to move quiclky have the MAF set up so you can get a quick look into it. Or you can have the ign on, ground term E on the ALDL and quickly look at the MAF
Thanks, I'll try to ground the E on the ALDL and check the MAF, I did pick up an extra burn off module used when I found one on ebay just in case since since I think they are over $250 for an 85! I have seen it go into closed loop with my auto xray but this is rare. When it does it switches from running rich to lean! So I'm sure something has got to be up somewhere. Thanks. I'll follow your suggestion.
again, double check this with another scanner, I am not confident of the xray on the early style ecms. You may be chasing something that does not exist? no other codes makes me question this?
